Breast augmentation surgery is a surgical procedure to increase breasts’ volume. This surgery is also known as ‘’Augmentation Mammoplasty’’.
If there is any sagging and looseness, breast tissue’s recovery could be done during this surgery.
In this surgery, Breast implants are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles. Silicone could also be used as well as benefiting from the adipose tissue in the body itself.
In surgeries where the body’s own tissue is used, fat taken from fat layer on both sides of the abdomen is placed in the breast tissue. Implants, on the other hand, may contain saline or silicone gel in silicone sheath. However, fat filling is not a permanent method.
You will need to discuss with the plastic surgeon about the size, feel and appearance before your breast augmentation surgery. Usually general anesthesia will be used during the surgery.
Breast Augmentation surgery consists of three basic steps :
First step is to choose the incision where the breast prosthesis will be placed.
With this incision, a surgical pocket is created where the breast prosthesis will be placed.
In the final stage of breast augmentation surgery, the breast prosthesis is placed in the surgically prepared area.

One night hospitalisation after the surgery will be enough. Patients will experience mild pain after the surgery. If the prosthesis is placed behind the muscle, there may be limitation in arm movements for couple of days.
Under normal circumstances, the breast area may be tender and painful for around 2-3 weeks’ time after the surgery. Patient will need to wear a surgical bra for around 2-4 weeks. They will be able to return to work in a couple of days time. Surgical stitches will be removed in an average of 10-12 days after the surgery.
Breast prostheses do not give any harm to the body. Generally, it is recommended to have an annual control against leaks caused by the silicone outer surface of the prosthesis after 10 years.
Breast prosthesis does not cause cancer.
Under normal circumstances, minimum age needed for breast augmentation will be 18 years old. This is because all tissue formations in the body should be completed by this age.
Usually the procedure will be around 1 to 2 hours’ time. However, the procedure’s length could vary with each case depending on the individual.
Breast augmentation procedure is normally done under the effect of general anesthesia.
Yes silicon prostheses are safe to be used. Recently developed prostheses will not have any negative effect on patients’ body.
Usually patients will need to be hospitalized for 1 night until the effect of general anesthesia will wear off.
Patients should be able to return back to work within 3 to 4 days following the operation under the condition that patients will be working in an indoor office surrounding.
The breast will be fully formed in approximately around 6 months after the operation.
Fat injection operations will be performed in the absence of scar. Meanwhile for operations involving prosthesis, there will be visible scarring. However, patients should not be worry as the incision made will be hidden in breast’s lower fold thus it is not easy to spot this scar.
There is no specific time or season recommended for breast augmentation surgery therefore it could be done throughout the year. Nevertheless, patients should avoid area such as sea and swimming pool. Patients should refrain from staying directly under the sunlight.
